In our first 100 days of operation in Jamaica, we secured 100,000 phone subscribers - a goal originally established for the company's one-year mark. Never before in the history of mobile telecommunications had such tremendous growth been seen in a network, as Digicel broke record after record in surpassing its major competitor as the mobile provider with the largest customer base on the island.
Our launches in Trinidad & Tobago and Haiti in 2006 recorded even more impressive milestones with one million customers gained in Haiti alone after just eight months of operation. Digicel has played an important role in substantively increasing mobile penetration in the Caribbean region and through our reputation as "Monopoloy Breaker" and "Customer Champion" have made it possible for more and more people to access the latest mobile technology. Our acquisition of Cingular Wireless' Caribbean and Bermuda operations in 2005 and of Bouygues Telecom Caraibe in 2006 helped to dramatically expand our reach.
In 2006, we also began our expansion into Central America with the acquisition of an operation in El Salvador and subsequent licenses in Panama and Honduras. Digicel board members saw similar opportunties in the Pacific and Digicel Pacific Ltd was born with its first launch in Samoa in 2006.
In each of our markets we bring competition for the incumbent, better customer care and superior network quality. All of which has translated into a better service experience for the customer who have embraced the freedom of choice offered by Digicel.
We recognise our staff and management team are largely responsible for our success to date. Digicel's unique culture is driven by an entrepreneurial style encapsulated by our Chairman, board of directors and management, all seasoned telecom executives and industry experts with vast experience in building, expanding and marketing mobile services both in the Caribbean, Latin America and in other international markets. Currently, Digicel's staff is in excess of 5,500.
Digicel's investment in the region accounts for more than US$3.4 billion. We are in a position of strength with a unique market opportunity, leading brand, and an excellent offering that is unmatched in the region. |
